Floyd Mayweather just announced that following his bout against Andre Berto he will be hanging up his gloves. Barring how most people feel about Money Mayweather, this is one of his smarter career decisions. Unbeaten in 48 fights, it takes discipline to know when "it's time". A large number of sporting greats fail to realize that they in fact are not Benjamin Button and try to squeeze that final drop of greatness from their proverbial fountain of youth. Many of those athletes find out the hard way that nobody can beat father time and they end up falling from grace when they could have essentially gone out on top.

This brings me to the Boks.

No disrespect to some obvious South African rugby legends, but as a rule of thumb I think it should be safe to assume that once you start commentating matches, its time to hang up the boots. Every coach in any sport knows that when it comes to winning titles and championships a combination of experience and youth is essential. You need players who can (excuse my cliche sayings, but) "keep their nerve under pressure", players who have "been there before" and players who "know how to win". I think the Boks definitely have these players in abundance and have that part of the puzzle figured out. But you also need those young fiery, almost unpredictable players who will keep opponents on their toes, this is where I believe the Boks could improve.

With the World Cup just around the corner and the Springboks coming off some frankly embarrassing losses by their own high standards, it would be refreshing to see an injection of youth make up the majority of the squad and some experienced players fill in on the fringes. No doubt there is a good pool of young South African talent to choose from and sooner or later the next generation is going to have to step up, my view is the sooner the better.
