Game 1 of the BNL finals was on tonight and I just got done watching a thrilling encounter between the Duzi Royals and the Egoli Magic. The game ended with the Royals coming out victorious, winning by just one point (57-56). Near the end of the game the stats showed that Egoli had shot 2-31 from 3 point range. 2-31! Thats 6%. Because I (and presumably Royals coach Michel Wa Katalay) were so stunned that the game still remained a nail-biter, I used my stellar mathematics mind to put together a couple statistics together to illustrate just how horrific 2-31 is.

Disclaimer: My statistics might not be 100% correct, so bear with me.

Taking only tonight's game into account the Magic had a 6% chance of making a 3 every time they put one up. Here are a couple things with similar or better odds.

1). Roulette

Yup, the game known as the the worst odds in the house. If you were to put a chip on each of your 2 lucky numbers, (with 38 total numbers on the table) you would have a 5% chance of one of them hitting.

2). Shaq and Dwight from 3

Over their careers Dwight and Shaq are 5 from 48 and 1 from 22 from behind the arc respectively, This makes their combined shooting percentage a dismal 8.56%, which still narrowly beats their South African "Magic" counterparts.

3). OKC Fans....From HALF COURT!

In the NBA season of 2013, Oklahoma City Thunder fans were unstoppable during their on court competitions. With just one attempt each, fans who competed in the Half court hauls went for a collective 5-22 (22.7%).

With Game two coming up for them, Egoli players and fans alike will hope that any and all shooting woes are behind them. Statistically speaking it's highly unlikely for them to have shooting nightmares in two consecutive games, but you never know in sports.
