With the value of the Rand steadily plummeting day to day, it seems only right that top athletes in the country see their wages increase two-fold right? Wrong. Kaizer Chiefs' keeper Itumeleng Khune found this reality out this preseason as he was made to eat a healthy serving of humble pie.
Ok, 1st things first, Khune is an extremely talented player who brings a great deal of leadership and intangibles to South African football....Now that that is out of the way, let's get realistic for a second. Yes Chiefs football club has a great deal of #OldMoney in comparison to other SA clubs (a topic for a different date), but other than TV rights of which correct me if I'm wrong are exclusive to SuperSport, and the annual Black Label Cup, where exactly are they generating this sort of money from? Oh yes, how could I forget, Kaizer Chiefs Insurance and Funeral Policies.
But really, all jokes aside, with the PSL averaging about 7000 people in attendance per match and tickets costing about R50 a head, it's hard for me to imagine any of these teams having deep enough pockets to satisfy the insatiable appetites of some players. In my opinion the revenue stream of PSL teams will have to see quite a sharp increase before top tier players can be handsomely and yes maybe deservedly compensated for their talent, until then they'll have to stick to raking it in from lucrative endorsements.
